Have you faced times when life has knocked you down to the ground, you feel defeated and the going has become tough. Rest assured that you are not the only one. All of us have those moments in life where our world has collapsed around us. The difference is that while some of us give up on life and accept defeat, the tough ones refuse to quit and keep charging at the challenges of life and never give up.

When you are going through a tough time, you feel that the entire world has turned its back on you and your life is going topsy-turvy. You might be looking for a way out from this chakravyuh but sometimes it isn’t easy to get through. So, what should you do when the going gets tough? Well, here is some help with THREE powerful Sutras.

Sutra-1 : Get Inspired From A Role Model

I have faced challenges like everybody else. Most times, I dug in by recalling and taking inspiration from my childhood role model. Everything looked easier thereafter.

This role model of mine is Group Captain Douglas Bader. He was a British Air Force pilot.  He lost BOTH his legs in an air crash in 1931. He built his muscles and learnt to walk on his hands – to toilets and other parts of Hospital – and refused to take any help from the Hospital staff till his artificial legs were fitted. He became a fighter pilot in World War-II by passing ALL the tests – including “scrambling” where he moved into pilot’s cockpit with a reverse flip by using his arms. He shot down 22 German planes. When his aircraft was shot down in France, he parachuted by freeing himself from his artificial legs. And see the picture below.

He was made a POW. He escaped from the Hospital through a window but was caught within 2 days. He was then put in a high security prison. He dug a tunnel and escaped again. On artificial/wooden legs. His posters were put up in Germany and he was caught again.  He played Golf to a Handicap of +7 (with artificial legs). He was asked to lead the Air Force fly past of the “Battle Of Britain” victory parade. He also went around the world – alone – in a single engine plane. He had landed in Kolkatta in India.

Looking at what he faced, our challenges looked so small. And to be defeated by them looked a hit on self-dignity. I have used the example of his superhuman willpower and “never say die” spirit any number of times in my life to rise and overcome challenges.

Sutra-2 : How Far Have You Made It

While the future is the challenge for you now, you should always look back to see how far you have come. Take a glance at where you are today vs. before you even started. Have an eye on how many hurdles and difficulties you have successfully conquered in the past. Nothing bucks up more than recalling that you have done it before and you shall overcome this also.  Here is a typical military response not to lose sight of the goal when it appears you are about to be overwhelmed.

 Sutra-3 :  Why Did You Start ?

When things become rough, you need anything to hold on to maintain your fortitude and remember why you began undertaking something in the first place. You’ll quickly stray from your route if you don’t know why you’re doing it. Life may be a battle at times, especially inside oneself. When circumstances are at their ugliest, ask the big question – “Why did I start this. What was my goal and why.” As a result, refreshing the starting motivation for undertaking this journey will steel your resolve not to be defeated. You would not want to give up on that goal.

The Takeaway

There will be numerous hardships in life. However, this is not something to be afraid of because that is life. What is important is to learn to inspire yourself to develop a “never say die” spirit. Nobody is born tough. You become one once you decide to steel yourself mentally and physically.

The Sutras here will get you going when the tough times come calling on you.
