A character called “Rancho” was made famous by the film “3-Idiots”. The character was played by the actor Aamir Khan. “Rancho” was shown to be a disruptive thinker asking difficult questions from his Teacher nick-named “Virus”.
Now, the question is, does your organization or the strategic team has a “Rancho” in it ? If not, then “Rancho” is your need of the hour. Sooner the better.
Today I am going to share about who is a “Rancho”, why do you need one for your business and most importantly how to find him. Watch this video carefully. It may change the course of your business trajectory.
Most CEOs and business owners do “think” as and when the “time” permits. Or as and when the relentless 14-hour punishing work pace will “allow”.
As this picture shows, they are so drowned in their daily operations that they are unable to get past their To-Do-List, AGM and Share Price of the Company etc. They have no time to THINK.
Our rishis and yogis did not go to the mountains for white water rafting or a walk on the mall. They needed solitude and complete detachment from daily routine to delve deep inside their sub-conscious to come up with eternal truths. In short, to rise above the obvious & beyond the established order.
So, who is a Rancho ?
There are various jargon used to describe a Rancho. A lateral thinker, a Strategic Thinker, an Out-Of-The-Box Thinker are some of the terms used for a Rancho.
You can ignore having a “Rancho” at a strategic level in your company at your own peril – regardless of the size of your company. Let us assume that we are convinced to have a Rancho. But what will a Rancho actually do ? What benefit can we expect from him. Well, here are a few things that he will do.
? Challenge the Holy Cow : Strategic thinking is to dare to question beliefs so deeply held by so many that they are considered almost sacred. The holy cows.
? Change Direction : He is your “Blue Ocean” strategist. With a single new idea a company can change course in a way that would not otherwise be possible.
? Bring Realism : A “Rancho” can be a type of critic that can force those proposing ideas to justify them. He is curious like a Cat.
? The Peer CEO : Rancho can be the sounding board for the CEO. As the saying goes “Its lonely at the top”. Rancho can be the peer for the “lonely” CEO for brainstorming the flood of ideas stuffed into his mind by the daily challenges.
Finally, the big question. That is, How to find a Rancho ? Well to start with, you could sing that song from the film 3-Idiots “Kahan Gaya Usae Dhoondo Re”. Here are a couple of tips.
? Keep your antenna up. You may have already met many such persons but your antenna did not catch it since you were NOT looking for that signal.
? Head Hunt A Talent : Grab a Talent. Do not get a person to “fill” a position. Grab a talent. Position then can be created for that person later on.
If you do this, then you are sure to find your “Rancho”. And everybody else would know too as they see you jumping with joy – happily singing “All Izz Well, Bhaiyya, All Izz Well”.
That’s all for now. Till we meet again.
